Birdsong

Point a webcam at the feeder or drop in photos. The birds get identified, their real recorded songs and calls get pulled from xeno-canto, and each one plays once, spread across the session, with dawn songs in the morning and evening calls at dusk.

How the time-of-day choice works

Every recording on xeno-canto carries a clock time and a type (song, call, dawn song, alarm call, and so on). For each bird the page pulls up to 100 recordings and scores them: in the morning it favors dawn songs and anything recorded between 04:00 and 10:00; in the evening it favors recordings from 16:00 to 21:00 and plain calls; at night it leans on calls and late recordings (which is where owls come from). Recording quality (A–C) and a comfortable length (10–75 s) add to the score. The bar under each bird shows how that species' recordings fall across morning, evening and night, so you can see whether it is really a dawn singer. In Auto mode the period is re-read when the session starts.
